What is Wintergreen Oil
Wintergreen Oil, also called Wintergreen, is an essential oil that is extracted by steam distillation from leaves of Gaultheria procumbens or Gaultheria fragrantissima soaked in water. This plant, also called Mountain Tea, originally grows at the foot of the Himalayas, Nepal and North America. Nowadays, Wintergreen is grown in many more places in the world and is a popular garden plant. Wintergreen is an evergreen plant, even in winter, hence the name Wintergreen. The plant, which can grow to a height of about 15 cm, belongs to the heather family and bears red berries that emerge from white or pinkish flowers. Wintergreen is naturally very rich in methyl salicylate, just like birch. Methyl salicylate is a substance that is now known as an anti-inflammatory painkiller and blood thinner. Methyl salicate is produced chemically on a large scale and is known under the brand name Aspirin©. Natural methyl salicylate is said to be more effective than artificially made methyl salicylate. Traditionally, there have been many medicinal uses of Wintergreen. There are descriptions of Wintergreen's uses from Native American and Indian medicine. Nowadays, Wintergreen is a widely used ingredient in products for muscle pain and joint pain. Wintergreen is also used as a flavoring and fragrance in toothpastes, mouthwashes and sweets. The sweet, spicy and woody scent of Wintergreen Oil is quite dominant and is said to have an activating effect and give a fresh interior space. It could reduce sluggish and stagnant thoughts.
